My Idea is very simple and straightforward, I want a "Recycle Bin" on Symbian OS.

This will help to recover accidentally deleted items such as Contact, SMS, Notes, Calender entries, Documents, Photos etc.

As long as it is configurable to use the bin or not, I support your idea. It's a good idea for a lot of people. Personally, I don't need one; I even don't use the bin on PC.

In case if you have accidentally deleted any SMS, contact list, pictures, mp3 song or even an application, this idea could be useful for you to recover them back (hopefully).

Yes , I also support this Idea. I have deleted many time stuff which I wanted to recover. If something was on memory card , we can still use 3rd party utilities on windows to recover it but things like contacts , SMS, logs just vanish. So its better to have Recycle Bin than not having any choice at all.

Best Regards,

Suyog

Another good idea! Such simple things would definitely make symbian OS even better. I think, if the guys back at Symbian takes it up seriously, then it won't be a big deal for them to implement such feature in the next update. Also, in such a case, it would be great if it will be upon the user's control on how much space 'Recycle bin' can use out of the main/expanded memory.

I'm a little undecided on this, I can see the utility in the idea, and for files it would even be fairly straightforward to implement (on most filesystems, including the flash based ones Symbian OS uses, deleting a file simple removes it from the directory listing, and marks any blocks it uses as free. No data is actually lost). So, it would be easy to just add it to another directory structure that was the recycle bin. Things are a little more complicated for messages, call logs, contacts, etc. As these are all stored in databases, it's essentially the same process, except the block(s) that contained the deleted data are no longer consistent, and so are not easily (if at all) recoverable. This means that the underlying storage for these data items would need some work in order to implement your idea. It's not a showstopper, but it could prove hard to provide a consistent user experience across all the applications/data items. So, +1, also on the proviso that it is in some way configurable.

Sure, it would probably add bloat (although the current implementation is already prone to fragmentation and collecting cruft); but wouldn't adding Zope-style versioning functionality to the existing data stores be a better idea? Although there are a few issues with handling messages, since the "message store" is really a tree of directories containing files with message content (and additional directories containing attachments) in addition to an index file that contains additional metadata and links to said content.

people only delete stuff from their phones to make room for something else. a recycle bin defies that purpose, and does NOT make room for anything else hence, useless :)

We all throw things out at times by accident and this could save the user a headache, time or money. To address other concerns about maybe "bogging" down the smart device, by this addition, one could simply empty their recycle bin. But,this function gives an "are you sure you want to delete that?" component to a device...Good!

I found out if we want to clear web history, cookie, cache or private data, we need to go every application (such as the internal web browser, Download!, Opera mini, Google Maps and so on) in order to remove those unwanted files and increase your phone memory. By integrating all of these 'temp' files into one location (which in this case is the recycle bin), one could easily save time. This is just an additional feature and at the same time, you can still delete those caches from the individual application. That's what I'm thinking about this 'recycle bin' feature. :)

I think this not as easy as we are thinking, even though this is a GOOD idea. This is not like Windows Recycle Bin.

For windows, only files goes to the bin. But mobile we are expecting Contact, SMS, Notes, Calender entries, Documents, Photos etc.

I guess only for files it is quite simple, like music, video, photo files. But for calender, SMS, Notes, Contacts

it is bit strange to recover them in original places.

There's a lot of material related to this idea within this thread (questioning Recycle Bin as an outdated paradigm): http://ideas.symbian.org/Idea/View?ideaid=4867

Great idea!

I often accidently delete a message, a phone number or other things and wish to have a recycle bin, where I can bring it back.

By default the recycle bin should delete all elements older than 3 days, but also should be deleted manually.

I wonder, why nobody had that idea before, because on computers this is standard since many years. And it was one of the most helpful improvements on computer-GUIs.

David Wenk , Maximilian Leerheuer - I agree with both of you, Accidents are part of life.

The idea of Recycle Bin is a just a clue to what we need on our Smartphones - Or its a perfect word to define our need on todays device.

Actually we can have much more smarter app then having a just 'Recycle Bin' like we have in Windows OS. Thats why we are here at Symbian Ideas.

Thanks to all who supported the Need of common Smartphone User and Thanks to Critics.
