I saw this and just loved it! When you pull out the headphones, music stops playing. So simple, so useful!

I wouldnt think its useful, infact it would be a pain if I un-plug my headphones so that I can hear the same on the speakers. I would vote against it.

In the settings you could be allowed the option to automatically pause when headphones are unplugged. But since they are trying to make Symbian simpler then they should consider not allowing users to change this setting (i.e. always pauses music). Personally, I hate it when I am in the library and I pull on my headphones and my music start blasting out. This feauture should be added.

Hmmm, You've missed the point on why the Walkman was popular in the first place - it's supposed to be portable AND personal. In other words, not intrusive to people around you like a boombox. I hate how Music Player starts blasting my music the minute the headphones accidentally disconnect. Then you're fumbling to try to stop your music. I rather hit that play button for speaker output when I think it's safe.

I agree. A simple setting in the music player that gives a user the option of whether they want it turned on (pauses when headphones are disconnected) or turned off (keeps music playing when headphones are disconnected). It would definitely fit with the Symbian philosophy of giving the user options and ways to customize. You could put it all under a "Settings" tab under "Options" when you first start the music player application up.

If we're going for an optimal solution, shouldn't a system service (or a music player application function) temporarily pause playback, so that a menu containing the option to either continue playback through the internal loudspeaker, or simply stop playback altogether can be presented to the user when an audio device "leaves"? (i.e. When the user disconnects their earphones, or when a Bluetooth audio device suddenly disconnects).

A pain would be if you pull out headphones accidently and the music plays out loud. Especially when it occured in a library, a church, during a funeral, etc. I think you don't lose much when you have to press one button after unplugging the headphones.

True, but I find I pull the headphones by accident a lot more than by choice. And accidentally playing loud music to the surroundings is not always appreciated. If you want to play using the speakers, you can press the play button again.

This idea has the same behaviour as my iPod nano, never noticed this until now!

I'm in favour for this - especially for Bluetooth headphones. On my old Sony Ericsson W960 (a Symbian9.1/UIQ3.0 device) if I switched off the Bluetooth earphones or their battery died the music would pause. On my current Nokia 6220 Classic (Symbian9.3/S603.2) the music continues and starts blasting out of the phone speaker. I find this incredibly annoying and it can be really embarrassing when I'm on a crowded train, my earphones run out of juice and loud techno music starts coming out of my pocket!

This should be fairly easy to implement, certainly where the connection to the headphones is more complex than a traditional jack (which may require extra trickery to detect the headphones being unplugged), and probably just requires the software controlling the audio path to present an event to anyone interested.
I would also make sure that the behaviour is presented to the user as an option, rather than being hard wired either way.
So, for this idea, I think it's just a case of waiting for the relevant components to be opened, and then someone to go in and do it.

This is a policy decision made by the phone manufacturer themselves, nothing to do with the symbian platform.

It is certainly up to the handset manufacturer whether to include it or not.
However, it is a feature that could and should be in the Symbian platform. In fact, I went ahead and implemented it. You can download the app and source code from here: http://code.google.com/p/bergamot/wiki/ForYourEarsOnly

If i listen music or watch videos with the nokia headset,
it should automatically stop the player,
if i disconnecting the headset from the phone,
and should play again if the headset is connected.
The automatically stop and play functions should be adjustable.

I support this as an option to pause the music, as I've also disconnected the headphones more times by accident than on purpose, and as my phone has speakers I often have to cover them up with my fingers when on the bus or train or tram!
It should send out notifications (when the option is set) so third party music applications like Mobbler can choose to deal with the disconnection too.

Good idea.I have had my phone jack pulled loose and had my music almost give me or others a heart attack.Plus, my music is important to me and I have meditation, hard ock, classical, pop, etc.....It is on headphones for ME to enjoy some "ME time", and not for some poor person who sits next to me when my jack falls out to get a BLAST of ROCK or a yoga lesson! :]

IIRC E-series devices do this, but they have different (more logical) behaviours for headphones accessory management. For example, ringtones and message alerts play through the headphones on E-series devices, they don't on N-series devices. And I noticed the N97 pauses audio if you disconnect the bluetooth headset.

This feature is included on most music players, and not having it apart of the Symbian OS makes it hard for handset manufacturers to produced refined offerings which take care of all the little things.

this feature would be awesome! it would be nice going into work after listening to music, not having to pause my media player, before disconnecting my headphones...

I was listening to a podcast using bluetooth headphones at work today. The battery charge in the bluetooth headphones went to zero. The sound rolled over to the speakers, disturbing all of my co-workers. They all know I use a Nokia smartphone.

this feature also availabe on the other Symbian Device. its available on Symbian UIQ3. Its when put on "Silent Profile". the phone will only output its sound/music to headphone. If headphone disconnected, the phone wont make suddent loud noise.
maybe S60v5 can copy this feature to the S60v5 Silence Profile. Exactly just like UIQ3 :) :)

Pause the music. Don't stop the playback altogether. Your title and description confused me a little.

I think phone should stop playing music immediately as the actual accessory is pulled out from the slot and then ask a question about continuing playback - like many Sony Ericsson phones do. ;)

i support this, music should pause , not stop

Yeah, I was also meaning that way :) Pause, not stop. Btw, did I see right that this feature is being constructed?

i hope this idea works, esp when you were hearing something that you don't want anyone to hear, and the ear-phones are disconnected all of a sudden by accident, or someone who thinks that he is just kidding disconnects them to hear what you are saying!
and btw, i propose that you make that work with videos too, if you were watching a video, and the earphone is disconnected, it must pause too!
